Dad Allegedly Murders Son After He Found ‘Compromising’ Photos Of Father Eating Feces
KEY POINTS
- Mark Redwine, 59, allegedly killed his 13-year-old son, Dylan, over "compromising" photos of the former
- His defense dismissed the claim, saying evidence showed the two had discussed the photos before without any harm
- Dylan's friends testified Tuesday and said the boy did not want to go to his father's home
A La Plata County, Colorado man allegedly killed his 13-year-old son in a fit of rage nearly a decade ago over photographs that showed the father dressing in women's underwear and eating feces.
Mark Redwine, 59, was accused of killing his son, Dylan, on the night of Nov. 18, 2012 after he had become enraged over the "compromising" photographs, newspaper The Denver Post reported, citing prosecutors. The teenager may have mentioned or shown the photographs to Mark on the night he was killed, special deputy district attorney Fred Johnson was cited as saying during Monday's trial.
"A damaged relationship, exposed with compromising photographs, photographs in the hands of a 13-year-old who is disgusted by it, which triggered a violent rage in the defendant," Johnson claimed.
Prosecutors plan to prove Dylan knew about the photographs and that the images made him uncomfortable to be around Mark, Johnson said. Additionally, he said the prosecution will present evidence showing Redwine killed Dylan in his living room, dumped the body off a trail not far from his house and then worked for months to mislead investigators and cover up the crime.
Redwine's attorney, John Moran, claimed the accusation involving the photographs was made up by "Facebook vigilantes" and that text messages showed Dylan had previously confronted his father about the photos but did not suffer any harm.
Moran said the photographs "came from deep within Mark's private life" and that prosecutors would be unable to prove a connection between them and Dylan's death.
Mark was indicted in July 2017 on second-degree murder and child abuse in connection to the death of Dylan, who disappeared from his father's Vallecito home on Nov. 19, 2012. His remains were not found until 2013 and 2014, with the first set of remains being discovered around eight miles from Mark's home.
Dylan's friends, whom he had hung out with in a sleepover prior to his court-ordered Thanksgiving trip, said the teen did not want to visit Mark and that Dylan had made plans to get out of his father's house as soon as he could, another report by The Denver Post said.
"He really didn't want to go," testified one of Dylan's childhood friends, 21-year-old Joseph Ceballos. He pointed out, "I could see fear inside [Dylan's] eyes."
Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty, who was working as a special prosecutor on the La Plata County case, did not press for the reason as to why Dylan did not want to visit his father, but he alluded to a strained and potentially abusive relationship between the teenager and Mark during an exchange in court while the jury was not present.
Moran maintained Mark's innocence, saying Dylan did not want to visit his father, ran away from home, and he suggested the teenager may have been attacked by a bear or a mountain lion due to what he said was a tooth mark on Dylan's skull.
Mark initially said he believed Dylan may have hitchhiked to meet a friend in the neighboring town of Bayfield, which is a theory that the defense has promoted at trial.
His defense claimed Dylan would sometimes deal with problems by "walking away" from them. Additionally, they also tried to undermine the significance of Dylan's reluctance to visit his father, suggesting that his perception had been unfairly influenced by his parents' custody battle.
The trial is expected to continue through mid-to-late July.
