Daily Harvest Recalls Dish That Received 470 Reports Of Illness
Vegan food delivery service Daily Harvest voluntarily recalled its French Lentil + Leek Crumbles product after the company said it received 470 reports that customers fell ill or had adverse reactions, according to a recent press release.
Daily Harvest on Thursday issued its third warning about the lentil product, which is part of the company's plant-based protein line. It comes after customers had taken to social media to share comments about "gastrointestinal illness and potential liver function issues."
Customers had provided reports on a Reddit forum that involved severe stomach issues and fever, as well as needing hospital care. More reports of such issues were shared on TikTok and Twitter. Daily Harvest issued its first warning on June 19.
Daily Harvest has urged customers to throw out the product and has worked with the FDA to investigate the problem.
On June 23, the FDA posted on its website that from April 28 to June 17, approximately 28,000 units of French Lentil + Leek Crumbles were distributed to consumers ... through online sales and direct delivery. The product was also purchased through retail sales at the company's Chicago store and a pop-up store in Los Angeles.
On Thursday, Daily Harvest founder and CEO Rachel Drori posted a note on the official website that the company was "working 24 hours and seven days a week" to find the root cause of the issues. Daily Harvest said that "All pathogen and toxicology results have come back negative so far."
Liver problems arising from food products are considered very rare.
One consumer of the product told CNN that "I've never experienced pain like that."
