Buddhist spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, turns 86 Tuesday. Born Lhamo Thondup, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, at the age of two and was given the spiritual name Tenzin Gyatso. He was formally recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama in 1939.

In 1989, the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign for freedom and democracy in Tibet.
