Dallas Cowboys News: Odell Beckham Jr. Could Sign Multi-Year Contract
If the Dallas Cowboys sign Odell Beckham Jr., it will likely be for the 2022 NFL season and beyond. Beckham met with the Cowboys Tuesday and is expected to pick a team shortly.
The Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and New York Giants all had meetings with Beckham in recent days. According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, all of Beckham's suitors are pursuing the free agent with a long-term deal in mind.
Beckham hasn't played since suffering an ACL injury in the Super Bowl. The teams that are trying to sign Beckham want him for the stretch run and beyond this season, when the three-time Pro Bowl receiver might finally return to his old form, Glazer reports.
Beckham hasn't worked out for any team, requiring the Cowboys, Bills and Giants to take a measure of risk in making a contract offer. Dallas owner Jerry Jones acknowledged in an appearance on 105.3 The Fan that he's not confident in regard to when Beckham might play this season.
"I'm not confident at all," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said via Mark Lane of WFAA. "And, so, that's the issue. Now, we all realize that issue of health, that issue of availability is here every time. Just this one is very obvious and very pointed toward his injury that occurred last year in the Super Bowl. We got a good bead on that. We got a great read on his career. It's not like a draft pick coming at you. You got a lot of history here and you can take a good look at, not only the obvious and that's his performance, but also any issues regarding health. So, all of this we got to come in with our eyes wide open and it has to be addressed, and that's when you can see if you can make a deal or not."
Dallas can use its $6.3 million in salary-cap room to sign Beckham. It's unknown how much money any of the suitors will offer the veteran. There's no guarantee that the Cowboys will present Beckham with a deal following Tuesday's meeting.
The Cowboys have been viewed as the favorites to sign Beckham. The receiver attended a Dallas Mavericks game Monday night alongside Cowboys stars Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs.
Injuries have plagued Beckham for much of his career, preventing him from making a Pro Bowl since he was last selected to the game in 2016. Since the 2017 season, Beckham has been limited to 53 regular-season games.
In 14 games between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams, Beckham had 44 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns last year. Beckham was a key contributor in the Rams' Super Bowl run, recording 21 catches for 288 yards and two scores in four playoff games. Beckham had a 35-yard reception and a 17-yard touchdown catch in the Super Bowl before leaving the contest early.
If the Cowboys sign Beckham, they are hoping that he can play a similar role for them in this year's postseason.
