Dallas Cowboys' Roster: Draft Picks, Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper Make Team A 2020 Contender
The Dallas Cowboys are receiving plenty of praise for their 2020 NFL Draft. After failing to make the playoffs in 2019, America’s Team is sure to face lofty expectations next season.
Dallas drafted Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb with the No.17 overall pick. Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs went to the Cowboys at No.51 overall. Plenty of mock drafts predicted both players would come off the board much earlier.
Lamb wasn’t expected to make it past the Las Vegas Raiders at No.12. Arguably the best receiver in the 2020 class, the 21-year-old had 62 catches for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns in his final college football season.
Diggs was thought to be a potential first-round selection. He had 37 tackles, eight passes defensed and three interceptions as a senior.
“We have well done, in-depth studies and charts that we all were reviewing (Friday) morning before the draft,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, via The Athletic. “All of our studies showed that he (Diggs) was in the one percentile. Diggs was in the one-percent chance of falling to us there. One.”
FanDuel Sportsbook gives Dallas +1700 Super Bowl odds. Only five other teams are given a better chance to win the championship.
In drafting Diggs, Dallas addressed a need and replaced cornerback Byron Jones, who left for the Miami Dolphins in free agency. The addition of Lamb could make the NFL’s No.1 ranked offense even better in 2020.
The Cowboys led the NFL in total yards and yards per play a season ago. Dallas finished sixth with 27.1 points per game.
All-Pro Center Travis Frederick retired after eight seasons with the Cowboys. The rest of Dallas’ offensive stars are set to return.
Amari Cooper was a free agent for only a few days. He signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Cowboys. No wide receiver has more touchdowns than Cooper since he was traded to Dallas in October 2018.
Mike Gallup could emerge as a Pro Bowl candidate after recording 66 catches for 1,107 yards as a second-year player in 2019. If Lamb meets expectations, Dallas’ receiving corps could be as dangerous as any in football.
Dak Prescott never hit free agency because the Cowboys used the franchise tag on the quarterback. The two sides have until July 15 to agree to a multi-year contract. Prescott was second in the league with 4,902 passing yards, and he set career-highs with 30 passing touchdowns and 8.2 yards per attempt.
Ezekiel Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million contract with Dallas in September. He ranks fourth all-time with 96.5 rushing yards per game.
Dallas has never finished with a losing record since Prescott became the team’s starting quarterback in 2016. The fourth-round pick is 40-24 with two trips to the divisional playoffs.
