Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Jason Garrett Won't Return As Head Coach Without Winning 2019 NFC East Title
Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones put Jason Garrett on notice after the team’s Week 12 loss against the New England Patriots. The head coach might not be in danger of being fired during the 2019 NFL season, but it’s clear that Garrett is in jeopardy of not returning for 2020.
“Let me tell you, no one in this country has earned the right to say ‘I'm a Jason Garrett man’ more than me. I am his man,” Jones said on “Good Morning Football” Wednesday. “And we want the very same thing. And that's for our players to play at their very best and we want his staff to coach at their very best. The bottom line is we get graded. I'm in business. I don't have to win the Super Bowl in business every year. I can come in sixth and have a hell of a year. But in this case, you've got to come in first. You've got to come in first. So fundamentally, you've asked for something that's a very narrow window to begin with. I want Jason to get it done.”
Garrett is in the final year of his contract with Dallas. He’s not expected to be re-signed if the Cowboys have a disappointing campaign.
The definition of a “successful” 2019 season for the Cowboys is certainly subjective. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes Jones will deem the year a failure if the Cowboys don’t win the NFC East, at the very least. Anything but a first-place finish in the division could spell the end of Garrett’s tenure in Dallas.
Jones believes the Cowboys have a championship-caliber roster. A second straight NFC East title might not be good enough for Garrett to earn an extension in Dallas.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported earlier this season that Garrett is unlikely to be back with the Cowboys after 2019 unless Dallas has a strong playoff run. That could mean Garrett needs to lead the team to the NFC Championship Game.
Since winning Super Bowl XXX in January of 1996, the Cowboys haven’t played in the conference title game. Dallas came one victory short of doing so last year when the team was beaten by the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Playoffs.
The Cowboys have had three straight winning seasons with three NFC East championships in the last five years. Dallas has only finished below .500 once since Garrett was officially named the head coach before 2011 season.
Garrett has two playoff wins as a head coach. Those victories came four years apart from one another.
Dallas is a game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East at the start of Week 13. The Cowboys will host the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving.
