‘Dancing With The Stars’ 2016 Finale Spoilers: Which Season 23 Pair Won The Mirror Ball Trophy?
The Mirror Ball trophy has officially found a new home. After 11 weeks, one lucky — and talented — Season 23 “Dancing With the Stars” pair has wiped out the rest of the competition.
On Tuesday, the three remaining couples returned to the ballroom for two final dances on the ABC series. The “DWTS” contestants were asked to revisit their favorite routine from Season 23. Team Lindsatron — Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold — kicked off the night, performing their Week 6 routine. When they first performed it they received an astounding 37 out of 40 and their finale routine was, of course, exceptional.
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess followed shortly after with a redo of their Cirque du Soleil night dance. When they first performed it in Week 4, they were awarded at 28 out of 30. Although no score was awarded for the finale, James and Sharna’s routine was near-perfect.
Following some Christmas-themed troupe dances and laughs with hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, musician Andy Grammer performed his hit single “Fresh Eyes.” The performance was accompanied by two troupe dancers, who cleared the stage after the song wrapped for Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy’s redo routine. The pair revisit their trio dance from Week 10, which brought Maksim Chmerkovskiy to the stage. Team Valaur were originally awarded a perfect score for the routine, and while they were not scored in the “DWTS” finale, we imagine they would have gotten another.
Heading into the final performances, Laurie and Val were at the top of the leaderboard with a 78 overall score. James and Sharna were right on their tails with 77 points and Calvin and Lindsay were hanging back just slightly with a cumulative score of 75.
James and Sharna shared a heartwarming moment in the rehearsal room during which the Indycar racer gives his Season 23 partner the first jumpsuit he wore after a near death experience. They then took to the ballroom, performing a Viennese Waltz/Foxtrot to “Over and Over Again” by Nathan Sykes. The combo routine received a perfect score of 40 out of 40 and set the tone for the final dances.
Calvin and Lindsay were up next and they once again brought the fun. The pair performed a Quickstep/Jive routine, which wowed the judges and the audience alike. Both Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli could hardly contain their excitement. The judges enthusiasm for Team Lindsatron’s routine — which hard-to-please Len Goodman described as “a joy” — was reflected in their perfect score.
Last, but certainly not least, Laurie and Val hit the ballroom to perform a stunning Foxtrot/Argentine Tango. Before they took to the dance floor, the duo shared one final heartwarming moment together, expressing how far they’ve come and how much they’ll miss their big brother-little sister bond. Their dance featured no shortage of fancy footwork, but it was the flips, tricks and twirls that really wowed. Bruno immediately jumped from his seat to compliment the duo, who received the third and final perfect score of the night.
When the time came to announce the winner, the anticipation was high as the Season 23 “DWTS” final three were hot on one another’s tails. The three identical finale scores left Team Valaur, Team Stop and Go and Team Lindsatron planted firmly in their spots on the leaderboard, meaning only viewer votes could tell who the winner was. Back in the grove, hosts Tom and Erin announced the first team knocked out of the competition — Calvin and Lindsay. With just James and Sharna and Laurie and Val in the running it was time for the big reveal.
The 2016 Mirror Ball was awarded to Laurie and Val. Before the show ended, the winners thanked viewers for supporting them. Val shared one final message for kids everywhere, reminding them that they don’t need to wait until they’re grown to start changing the world.
“Dancing With the Stars” returns for Season 24 in March 2017. It unknown which stars will compete in that installment of the ABC dancing competition.
