Derek Hough is taking a break from the ballroom — and the former “Dancing With the Stars” pro has a pretty good reason bolstering his decision to ditch the hit ABC series. During the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards, which took place on Sunday, the six-time Mirror Ball champion explained why he opted to sit out of Season 22.

“I think I just always had the feeling of being inspired — I want to give all to whatever I’m doing. I think I just needed a little bit of time to grow,” Derek, 30, explained to People magazine. “It sounds dramatic but it’s true — so for me this is giving me some time to work on other skills that I want to work on for myself.”

Some of those skills include evolving as a dancer. The artist dished that he wants to “extend my vocabulary of movement in different avenues and different things.”

Does that mean audiences can expect the fan favorite “DWTS” cast mate to come back to the ballroom with new tricks up his sequined covered sleeve?

“I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes,” Hough said of whether he’ll return for Season 23 of the dancing series.

Currently the Emmy-winning performer is starring in the Broadway production of “Singing in the Rain,” following in the dance steps of iconic entertainer Gene Kelly.

“This role is gonna be … it’s a big role. It’s an honor — a role of a lifetime,” Hough dished to Broadway.com last month, revealing that he’s excited to get drenched during the upcoming musical.

But just because Hough is splashing around on stage doesn’t mean his “DWTS” career is over. The performer explained that he’ll always be a part of the “DWTS” family “in some way,” whether that means returning as a pro or performing a guest star.

“We’ll see what happens,” he teased.

“Dancing With the Stars” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
