Danny DeVito Supports His Friend Colin Farrell As The Penguin
Danny DeVito is showing his support for Colin Farrell, who was recently announced as the villainous Penguin in Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman” movie.
DeVito, who previously played the Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie “Batman Returns,” shared his positive thoughts about the actor, revealing he has no doubt he’ll do a great job.
"Colin’s a great actor,” DeVito said in an interview with Screen Rant. “He’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him for many years and I think he’s going to do a great job as the Penguin. It’s going to be really interesting to see his take on it."
The two actors previously worked together on the Burton film “Dumbo.”
Farrell’s potential casting was first reported by Deadline, who said he had been in talks to play the iconic crime lord. Initially, the role was thought to have gone to either Jonah Hill or Josh Gad, both being strong contenders. However, Farrell beat them out in the end.
Along with Farrell’s Penguin being announced, we also have to look forward to Paul Dano as The Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne.
It is unknown exactly how Farrell’s take on the villain will compare to DeVito’s iteration, which seemed more monster than mobster and was a dark turn for him in terms of characters he has played. It's unclear what the plans are for the character in this new film.
This isn't the first time DeVito has spoken out about another actor's portrayal of the iconic character. In fact, he opened up about Robin Lord Taylor's of Penguin/Oswald Cobbelpot on the show "Gotham," back in 2014, also praising the young actor.
"I've watched the show. I think he's a very good young Penguin. He's a terrific actor."
