Liverpool FC's new summer signing Darwin Nunez received his senior club career's first red card Monday.

The incident took place during Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the 2022-23 Premier League.

The Reds signed Nunez at a club record fee of $103 million from Benfica this summer. In what was his first appearance in Anfield and first Premier League start, Nunez had an evening to forget in Merseyside on Monday. The Uruguay national lost his cool while arguing with Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen and headbutted the Eagles center-back.

The incident took place in the second half. For the violent behavior, the referee slammed Nunez with a straight red card that saw the former Benfica forward walk off the field immediately. Any straight red card for violent conduct in the Premier League results in a three-game ban, according to Goal.com.

Nunez was reportedly the first Liverpool player to be sent off for violent conduct during Jurgen Klopp's memorable reign at Anfield.

Liverpool are set to be without the highly-rated striker throughout August. Nunez will miss the team's Premier League away fixture against Manchester United (Aug. 22) and home games against Bournemouth (Aug. 27) and Newcastle United (Aug. 31).

From their first two games in the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, Klopp's Liverpool have taken just two points, having drawn their games against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Klopp insisted that Nunez was provoked by Andersen. He, however, admitted that Nunez made a mistake and he would speak with the Uruguayan forward.

"There was provocation but it was definitely the wrong reaction. He will learn from that. Of course, I will speak with him. I came in [after the game] and wanted to see the Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Núñez) made a mistake. Of course, I will talk about it with Darwin but not yet," Klopp told reporters after the 1-1 draw.
