David Beckham Reflects on ‘Complicated’ Marriage With Wife Victoria Amid Divorce Rumors
David and Victoria Beckham are not getting a divorce but that hasn’t stopped countless tabloids from publishing stories about the end of their marriage. In a new interview, the former footballer shared the challenges of preventing outsiders from tearing his relationship apart.
It has been almost 20 years since Victoria and David first married in a private ceremony in 1999. Since then, the couple has managed to build a solid marriage, but their relationship remains the target of breakup rumors and cheating scandals, which hasn’t been easy for either star.
In a preview of “The Sunday Project,” David opened up about how the split speculations have affected his marriage. “To have been married for the amount of time that we have, it’s always hard work.”
“It becomes a little more complicated,” he told host Lisa Wilkinson.
David also got candid about the significance of his relationship with his four kids, sons Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, and Cruz, 13, and daughter Harper, 7. “Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference, and I’ve noticed that with my children,” he shared.
“The thing we have to do is protect our children,” David said of the tabloid stories about the couple’s marriage.
David’s comments come more than a month after his wife told British Vogue why they have stayed together for so long. “We both realize that we are stronger together than we are as individuals,” Victoria explained.
“It’s all about the family unit. We are much stronger, the six of us, than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key.”
In June, the couple released a statement slamming rumors claiming they were going to divorce amid cheating rumors. “There is no statement due or divorce,” a spokesperson said at the time. “This is just fake social media news. This is all very bizarre and an embarrassing waste of time.”
While Victoria noted she and her husband have built a solid foundation, the former Spice Girl admitted there are times when they find it difficult to drown out certain stories.
“People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years, so David and I are pretty used to ignoring the nonsense and just carrying on as normal,” she told British Vogue last month. “But these things have a wider effect on the people around us, and that’s unfair.”
