KEY POINTS

  • David de Gea made an 87th-minute save against Newcastle
  • Man Utd were held to a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park
  • Man Utd still have two games in hand in the league

David de Gea was Manchester United's hero yet again after he made an incredible save toward the end of the second half to hand his side a crucial point against Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday.

Newcastle had to settle for a 1-1 draw after midfielder Miguel Almiron's strike was stopped by a diving De Gea at the 87th minute. Almiron curled a right-footed strike at the goal from the left-inside channel that ended off the post on the right side. Almiron bolted on to the rebound and guided a left-footed effort toward the top-left corner, but De Gea reached at full stretch to turn it over the bar.

Newcastle's No. 10 Allan Saint-Maximin put them 1-0 up at St. James' Park with his seventh-minute strike but the lead was negated by Edinson Cavani, who scored for the visitors after coming off the bench in the second half. The scoreline remained 1-1 till the final whistle, thanks to goalkeeper De Gea's stunning efforts toward the end.

Even Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted he was left astounded by the save, which was only one of several close calls that could have helped Newcastle win the game.

"We are very disappointed [not to win]. We deserved to win. The lads executed the game plan brilliantly. We had to be very good defensively in midfield. I thought we were very good and didn't deserve to concede. How David De Gea saved from Miguel Almiron at the end, I don't know. I thought it was in," Howe said in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, talkSport reported.

The 1-1 draw meant Manchester United now have 28 points from 17 games. The Red Devils are placed seventh in the 2021-22 Premier League table but they still have two games in hand. Newcastle have so far managed to secure just one win in the league, while it was their 18th draw. The Magpies are in the relegation zone as they sit 19th in the table.
