David Foster Says It's 'Great' Being A Dad Again At 72 With Wife Katharine McPhee
KEY POINTS
- David Foster said it feels "great" to be a dad again because he now has more time to spend with his child
- The Grammy-winning composer shared it’s too early to tell if his son, Rennie David, has any musical talent
- Foster is thankful to his wife Katharine McPhee because she’s able to work while taking care of their son
David Foster got candid about his experience welcoming a son at the age of 72.
The esteemed musician spoke with People this week about his sold-out show at Wynn Las Vegas’ Encore Theater called “An Intimate Evening with David Foster” on Jan. 21. During the interview, his child with his much younger wife, Katharine McPhee, 37, was brought up.
“It’s just great being a dad. It’s too cliché to say, 'Now I have more time,' but I do: I have more time,” the Canadian composer told the outlet.
Foster then joked that his son Rennie David, whom they welcomed in February 2021, can already “play Mozart and Bach flawlessly.”
“At 11 months?… Obviously, we don’t see any musical talent yet, but who knows?” he clarified.
The Grammy-winning musician also shared that McPhee has already expressed her desire to get back to work full-time now that little Rennie is almost 1 year old.
David noted that he’s grateful because the “Over It” songstress is able to take care of their child and work at the same time.
"Our baby's 11 months old, so she wants to get back to work full time — and it won't be with me, probably," he said.
"I'm really grateful to her that she just goes, 'OK, I'll grab the baby, I'll come out, and sing a few songs.' It's really great — she's a star," he added.
Touching on the issue that’s been going around since he tied the knot with McPhee in 2019, Foster addressed those who continue to comment on their age difference.
“People always make the reference with Kat and I with the age difference, but I've always said [there are] so many things that can bring a marriage down, and age difference is just one of them. [There are] so many things that can go wrong. We think we have it pretty together,” the record producer said.
In December 2021, Foster received flak after showing off a sexy photo of his wife months after she gave birth to their son. Social media users called him out and claimed that he might have left her right away if she didn’t “bounce back” after the pregnancy.
Amid the backlash, McPhee came forward to defend her husband, saying she found a great workout routine that works for her and her body. She told netizens who criticized Foster’s post to “seriously get a life.”
“Maybe you should have more of an attitude of like, let's say… 'Oh that's nice he thinks his wife is hot.' I cannot with this overly sensitive society right now. But as Taylor Swift said haters gonna hate,” she concluded her post.
While Rennie David is McPhee’s first child, he is Foster’s sixth overall. He has five adult daughters from his previous relationships.
