Author David Sedaris has drawn scorn on social media after the humorist appeared on a morning show and suggested customers should have the right to fire employees.

The comedian came under fire following his appearance on “CBS Sunday Morning.” During the segment, Sedaris introduced the idea of a “citizen’s dismissal,” which would allow customers to fire employees rather than the power being strictly in the hands of the employer.

While Sedaris insisted he didn’t think people should “go crazy” with firing others, he does believe some people “could easily be replaced by go-getters.”

However, his words didn’t resonate with fans, who were shocked by his “citizen’s dismissal” suggestion.

“David Sedaris going full Karen is definitely not what I expected this Sunday but 2020 ain’t done with us yet,” comedian Bridget Phetasy tweeted.

Activist and writer Charlotte Clymer added, “I love David Sedaris' writing, and I am very familiar with his sardonic style. And y'all... this just goes from bad to worse. I was waiting for the punchline or a clever pivot, and it just never came. I have no idea why he thought this was what we needed to hear in this moment.”

Meanwhile, one tweet revealed disappointment in CBS for allowing Sedaris’ segment to air. The viewer copied and pasted an email they sent to the network.

“As a person who works in customer service, David Sedaris’ words could have far-reaching, negative impacts on many folks like me. To think, they gave this person a platform to spew his nonsense and not others who truly deserved it,” the tweet read.

As of late Sunday, Sedaris hasn’t addressed the backlash from the television appearance.
