"The Me You Can't See" director Dawn Porter has said Prince Harry volunteered to take part in an on-camera therapy for the AppleTV+ docuseries. Ahead of the show's official premiere, Porter spoke about her experiences working with Oprah Winfrey and the Duke of Sussex.
Porter told Town & Country that her co-director, Asif Kapadia, worked closely with Harry. She said they learned several things about what the husband of Meghan Markle has been doing to maintain his mental wellness.
The documentary filmmaker added that having Oprah Winfrey and some good advisers as part of the team was a huge advantage. Porter also addressed Prince Harry's decision to show himself in a therapy session.
"Harry, he volunteered. He was game for trying something," Porter said of Harry. "And we thought well, we have the opportunity to film this [therapy] and maybe this is something that will work for some people, maybe it won't, but the idea is that you don't tick a box and you're done, mental wellness is an ongoing pursuit."
"The Me You Can't See" will feature Prince Harry giving details about how he coped up following the untimely death of Princess Diana, his early years with the royal family and Meghan Markle and Archie's impact on him. The docuseries will also show how the brother of Prince William has grown stronger mentally after spending four years with his therapist.
Harry had earlier cited Meghan as the primary reason why he decided to get some help. The prince said the former "Suits" actress inspired him to pursue therapy more seriously after they met.
"It was meeting and being with Meghan, I knew that if I didn't do therapy and fix myself, that I was going to lose this woman who I could see spending the rest of my life with," Prince Harry previously stated.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex started dating in July 2016 and announced their engagement in November 2017. Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot on May 19, 2018, and welcomed their first child on May 6, 2019.
