‘Daytime Divas’ Canceled; VH1 Series Not Returning For Season 2
VH1 has canceled “Daytime Divas” after just one season.
News that the ladies of “The Lunch Hour” won’t be returning for Season 2 was first reported by TVLine.
Based on the 2011 book “Satan’s Sisters” by former “The View” co-host Star Jones, “Daytime Divas” starred Vanessa Williams, Tichina Arnold, Fiona Gubelmann, Chloe Bridges, and Camille Guaty as the hosts of a long-running daytime talk show called “The Lunch Hour,” where they gather around the table to discuss life, love, politics, and juicy gossip.
Season 1 ended with a two-hour finale on July 31, during which Maxine (Williams) was arrested for her husband’s murder. She, however, was only covering for the real culprit, her son Shawn (McKinley Freeman).
In an interview with TVLine last July, showrunner Chris Alberghini said that fans would see how Maxine is holding up in prison if the series was renewed for another season. “Maxine’s a very dominant and controlling presence. She’s also very resourceful, and I think it’d be interesting to see a woman like that in prison, where her resources and access and influences are limited — at least initially,” Alberghini said. “It’d be fun to see what she could make out of that situation. Not that we’re basing her on this, but I’d love to see how Martha Stewart’s first few days were.”
Alberghini added that he and his fellow showrunner Mike Chessler were also planning to further explore Maxine’s relationship with Shawn going forward. “We’re all very interested in Shawn and Maxine’s relationship. I’m interested in showing the complexity of it,” the exec producer said at the time. “What other secrets do they have? What else has one covered up for the other? Mother-son relationships can be just as complicated as mother-daughter relationships, so we’d like to explore that more.”
With the cancellation of “Daytime Divas” and “The Breaks” as well as “Hit the Floor’s” move to BET, Deadline pointed out that VH1 is becoming an unscripted-only network.
