A police body camera captured footage of five police officers rescuing a male driver who was stuck inside a burning sedan after crashing into a utility pole late Sunday night in Washington, D.C.

Officer Steven Hines of the Metropolitan Police Department immediately activated his body camera and ran toward the burning car unaware if the driver was still inside, according to the local NBC affiliate. "I tried to look in it, but there was too much smoke. I couldn't really see inside the vehicle," Hines said.

In the video, Hines is heard saying that he was going to break the front window. Other officers were also called to the scene to help assist him as the flames expanded.

"Our minds were pretty much on going home. Another couple of minutes, if we hadn't been there, if Hines hadn't stumbled across it, it'd be a completely different story," Officer John Hayes said.

Officers Jacoby Taylor and Roberto Adams were able to help pull the man out of the vehicle. "Adams quickly jumped in and was able to pull the seat belt off the driver. At that point, we quickly pulled him out of the car and got him away from the flames," Taylor said.

They then smashed more windows to make sure no one else was inside the car.

Emergency crews transported the driver to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. Police have not released information about the severity of the driver’s injuries nor what caused the crash. His name has not been released.

“It was our duty to react quickly to make sure no one else was in that car,” Taylor told a local TV station. “We reacted quickly together as a team.”

Sgt. Nicole Brown, the officers’ supervisor, said Hines had perfect timing. “If he had arrived even maybe two to three minutes later, it would have just been too late.”

Brown said the way the officers’ response was amazing. "It was definitely heroism at its finest,” she said.

The D.C. Police Department tweeted a video of the rescue Tuesday afternoon saying, “Proud of two MPD officers from 5D for rescuing a driver a burning car.”
