- De Gea is feeling stronger and is ready for redemption
David De Gea has been under scrutiny as of late, but he remains confident that he is Manchester United’s top goalkeeper amid calls for Dean Henderson to wear the number one shirt following his impressive showing at Sheffield United.
De Gea has been around long enough at Old Trafford to know that fans want only the best performance from its players. And the 29-year-old is aware that competition is needed to get the best team. However, the Spaniard feels that he is still the main guy for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer moving forward.
"I have been here many years now. I have a lot of experience and I think I have been at a very good level for a long time now,” De Gea told BT Sport's Matt Smith. "I have the confidence of the gaffer, the club and my team-mates. I am happy to be here and I am looking forward to more years here. Hopefully good things will happen to this club - like trophies - and I hope I can remain the number one here for a long time."
As for Henderson, who signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United last month, De Gea said he has nothing against the competition he faces for first-team goalkeeping duties. He believes it will be good for the Red Devils.
"That’s what the club wants, to have various options in each position in order to have a better team and a more competitive club. I have always had very good competition with very good goalkeepers of the highest level. Ultimately we are always looking to help each other out," he added.
But the debate right now is on whether De Gea is still the wise choice for United, especially after the club's defeat to Crystal Palace last week. His mistakes from last season also continue to be fresh in the minds of many to this day. However, he believes that no one is spared from making mistakes and the best anyone can do is learn from them.
"I feel very, very well, very confident, very positive and that's very important for me," he told United's official website Friday. "Now it's time to be back to winning ways and winning trophies, that's the most important thing for us at the moment. Like I say I feel very, very good."
