  • De La Hoya open to possibly working with Alvarez at some point in the future
  • Alvarez content and happy with his working relationship with Eddie Hearn
  • De La Hoya content backing Alvarez from behind the scenes, lauds success

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya once had a good relationship with boxing champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Those ties are now severed, but the former is not closing doors on a potential reunion although such is not looking good.

Alvarez and De La Hoya went their different ways back in November following a contract dispute. It was the legendary boxer's promotion that set the stage for Alvarez’s rise to fame, backing him for more than 15 years.

However, things just turned ugly with the four-division champion suing DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions and De La Hoya for breach of contract. This stemmed from the group unable to agree on the Mexican’s next opponent and fight purse.

Alvarez is now handled by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, De La Hoya’s rival promoter. So far, the Mexican pugilist has had two super middleweight title fights. He won over England’s Callum Smith and Turkey’s Avni Yildirim respectively.

He is set to face Billy Joe Saunders next on May 8 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

So far, the 30-year-old boxing champion looks pretty impressive and happy under the tutelage of Hearn. Alvarez is all praises for Hearn, someone he branded as the best promoter in the world by far.

Additionally, he divulged that he wants to work with Hearn after the Saunders fight. So where does this leave De La Hoya?

De La Hoya is keeping an open mind and is happy with how things are going for Alvarez. However, he hopes that at some point he may get the chance to work with the boxing superstar once again when he spoke on “The Ak & Barak Show.

“I’ve had one fighter who in the past, in all those 20 years, that wasn’t happy. But I’m pretty sure that I’ll be working with him once again. I have no doubt whatsoever. I mean, look, people always think that the grass is greener on the other side. Well, we’ll see,” De La Hoya stated.

Until that time comes, it appears the Golden Boy CEO is content and happy seeing Alvarez reaping the fruits of his hard labor. He feels that the Mexican is at his peak right now and just wishes him the best.

“So, I think [Hearn is] doing a good job. I think that Canelo right now is on top of the world and, you know, good for him. You know, I wish him all the best, and let’s move on because you know, like I said, when Canelo fights, everybody wins,” he said.
