In a rare case, a dead baby was found inside a woman after she complained of abdominal pains.

According to reports, the 60-year-old unidentified woman was taken to a hospital in Khartoum, Sudan, last week, after she complained of abdominal pain and swelling. An ultrasound showed a dead baby inside her.

However, due to the size of the baby as well as the age of the woman, the doctors at the hospital initially said there was a minimal chance for her to survive if the procedure was conducted to remove the dead baby. The doctors, however, conducted further tests and found out that there was no fibrosis (excess fibrous connective tissue) related to the baby and hence decided to go ahead with the procedure.

The woman underwent the procedure Friday and the baby was removed from the body. Doctors said the baby was inside the woman for 15 years. This rare phenomenon is known as “Lithopedion” which occurs when the fetus dies during an ectopic pregnancy but is too big for the mother’s body to reabsorb. Such a phenomenon is very rare with only 300 known cases in medical history.
