Recently, a team of researchers has identified the apple as containing a range of heart-healthy benefits. This has added weight to the age-old phrase about the apple keeping diseases at bay.

Two Apples

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study’s researchers recommended consuming two apples each day to get maximum health benefits. In their study, 40 individuals with slightly high cholesterol levels consumed two big apples daily for eight weeks. After the period, researchers found their “bad” cholesterol levels decreased by nearly four percent.

Researchers say that apples contain high fiber that promotes the growth of good and cholesterol-reducing bacteria in the gut. They also revealed that consuming two apples per day can help relax the blood vessels. This is similar to the positive effect caused by foods that contain polyphenols, a natural compound that can also be found in tea or red wine.

Prof. Julie Lovegrove, the senior author of the research, commented that the age-old adage of eating an apple a day is almost accurate. He said that when compared to people drinking apple-based beverages, those who consume two apples daily have lower “bad” cholesterol with no reduction in good cholesterol.

Prof. Lovegrove believes that polyphenols and fiber in apples are very important. It is not hard to like an apple because it is very popular and easy to eat food. The fruit is also a great snack food.
