A 10-year-old boy died after being bitten by a snake that prowled inside the child's home. The incident took place Friday morning, local media reports said.

Authorities identified the victim as Karan Ahirwar, a resident of Sonkacch village, located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The child was sleeping inside his home when the snake bit him. The boy screamed after being attacked by the snake. His family members ran to him and found the snake slithering away.

The child was immediately rushed to a nearby village where the family knew a doctor. However, the doctor asked the family to take the boy to Bhopal for treatment. The child was taken to Berasia government hospital where he died during treatment Saturday night, police told The Times of India.

Investigating officer Dilip Jaiswal said the snake bit the boy on the left side of his back. The species of the snake was not identified.

The victim lived with his parents and elder brother. His father worked as a daily wager. It remains unclear how the snake managed to enter the home. The reports did not reveal if the snake was caught by the family members or it escaped.

Last month, an 11-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister died after being bitten by a snake at their home. The incident took place in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. According to local reports, the siblings were sleeping beside their mother when the snake bit the boy. He woke his mother up and complained of excruciating pain in the leg. When his mother checked him, she noticed a fresh wound on his leg that looked similar to snakebite. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he died during treatment. His sister told the other family members that she was also experiencing the pain and later, fell unconscious. Police arrived at the home and declared her dead. Investigators said that the same viper bit both bother and sister.
