Deadmau5 Grammy Performance Enhances Dance Genre, Jabs at Skrillex [Twitter]
Rivalry was rampant at the Grammy Awards on Sunday when electronic acts Deadmau5 and Skrillex went head to head for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album. Skrillex came out on top, but Deadmau5 still made his mark.
On the red carpet, Deadmau5 wore a shirt with Skrillex's personal phone number and the phrase U mad bro? underneath it.
But the electronica DJ was remembered for more than his puns when it came to this weekend's award ceremony. Deadmau5 performed with music industry veterans of various genres, such as The Foo Fighters, Lil' Wayne, Chris Brown and DJ David Guetta. In the past, pop artists such as Britney Spears and Lady Gaga have taken home the prize for dance categories. Guetta was nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2010, but lost to Lady Gaga's The Fame.
However, this is the first time that electronica-heavy dance DJs have been hyped up to the extent of a rivalry.
The Grammys would have been remiss not to put the faces and sound of dance music-defined recently by strong four-on-the-floor beats, sultry vocals and skittish digital editing tricks-center stage at this year's ceremony, wrote the Los Angeles Times of the dance genre presence at this year's award ceremony.
And according to Twitter, fans were pleased with the collaborative performance.
Watching the Grammys Performance. REALLY loved the Foo Fighters/Deadmau5 collab, one fan tweeted.
Best part about the Grammys last night was seeing Dave Grohl bob his head to Deadmau5's set, read another post.
Despite the playful prank, Deadmau5 seemed to be a good sport about the award show's outcome, tweeting congratulatory messages.
And @skrillex cleans out the mau5. ;) I wouldn't let anyone else do it. Oh well, I got a rad gift bag! : )
