Six people, including four minors, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh have been arrested after they allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl with hearing and speech impairments and took photos of the assault.
The unnamed minor victim had been lured by a neighbor Saturday from her home to a hut at an isolated area in Shahdol district, where the rest of the accused were waiting, The Times of India reported, citing additional director general of police D. C. Sagar.
All six allegedly physically assaulted the girl and took turns to rape her.
The incident was reported Thursday after the victim's father was shown a picture of the alleged assault that was forward to a local's phone by one of the accused.
The victim, upon being asked about the photo, broke down and revealed the ordeal to her mother. They then informed the village elders of the incident and had it reported to police.
Authorities sent the girl to a hospital, where a medical examination confirmed the sexual assault.
Police later arranged for a sign language interpreter and registered a first information report against the six alleged rapists under various sections, including sections for the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offenses Act, based on the girl's information.
The family has been assured of all possible help, Sagar said. Additionally, he has instructed the investigating officer to issue a charge sheet at the earliest possible time.
A similar incident happened in the state of Uttar Pradesh in late June when a 12-year-old girl with a history of mental illness was allegedly abducted and gang-raped after attending a wedding.
The girl was found unconscious on June 25 after going missing the night before, police said.
Two unidentified men had abducted and raped her, according to a complaint lodged in connection to the incident. Rape was confirmed in the girl's medical report.
A case of abduction and gang rape was later registered against the two men.
In another case, a 23-year-old woman with speech and hearing impairments was allegedly raped in the state of Maharashtra on July 2 by a teenage thief.
The woman was on her way to work when the 18-year-old thief, identified as Ashiwin Rathwa, allegedly overpowered her near the railway quarters in Kalyan, Thane. He also allegedly stole the victim's mobile phone before fleeing.
Rathwa was later arrested in the neighboring state of Gujarat on July 12 after the woman lodged a complaint.
