With The Deal Between AT&T And DirecTV Rumored To Take Place, Competition Between Cable And Content Providers Heats Up Even More
The rumored deal between AT&T and DirecTV may overshadow even the $45 billion Comcast–Time Warner Cable merger. The $40 billion deal will raise the number of AT&T subscribers to 36 million. And according to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, the Time Warner Cable merger will add approximately 7 million new customers, lifting the total number of subscribers to just over 30 million. Roberts is quick to point out Netflix‘s subscriber growth as a source of competition; last quarter Netflix reached 36 million U.S. subscribers. Competition between cable and content providers is creating new markets with an enormous customer base.
