  • PSG's bid for Dele Alli was thumbed down by Tottenham, a report said
  • Alli  scored a marginal goal for Tottenham against Maccabi Haifa
  • Spurs agreed on a $3.5 million loan deal with Benfica for Carlos Vinicius

The big break that Dele Alli is looking for will have to wait following reports that Tottenham has rejected a bid for the 24-year-old player.

The Guardian reported that Paris Saint-Germain's bid of $1.93 million was far from what the Spurs wanted. Hence, all Alli can do now is fight for a spot in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Alli has not seen much action for Tottenham. So far, he has not been featured in the Premier League after being substituted at halftime in the Spurs' clash with Everton. He has made only one appearance since the European League qualifying win over Shkendija in North Macedonia last month.

Despite his plight, Mourinho lauded the 24-year-old for his patience even while in the sidelines. Alli repaid that trust when he saw action against Maccabi Haifa. He scored the final point on a penalty as the Spurs won 7-2. Alli came in at halftime to replace Giovani Lo Celso.

Though he performed well in that victory, his stint with Tottenham is still up in the air. With the transfer deadline still a couple of days away, PSG or some other club could come and try to pluck him from the Spurs’ clutches.

Though the Alli deal did not push through, the Spurs did get something done with Benfica on Carlos Vinicius. Both sides have agreed on a loan deal worth $3.5 million. The agreement will also include a $52 million option to buy.

"Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD informed the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that it reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the loan of player Carlos Vinicius until the end of the 2020/21 sports season for an amount of €3 million," Benfica said in an official statement on its website.

"The said agreement, communicated at 11:56 pm on Thursday, includes a purchase option clause in the amount of €45 million, to which, if exercised, the amount paid for the loan will be deducted," the statement continued. "The agreement is dependent on the signing of the striker's sports work contract with Tottenham Hotspur."

The 25-year-old Brazilian and Mourinho are both under the umbrella of Jorge Mendes.

Prior to Benfica's official announcement, Mourinho opted to play it safe.

“No, I want you to ask me that question when it’s confirmed. Nobody told me it’s done so I’m going to respect the player, respect Benfica and wait a little bit more,” he said, per The Guardian.

Vinicius becomes the Spurs' sixth signing of the summer. His entry is expected to provide Harry Kane with much-needed help upfront. Other clubs who were linked to him include Inter Milan and Juventus.
