Delhi Gang-Rape Victim Is Named By UK Newspaper
The name of the Indian medical student who was brutally gang-raped on a Delhi bus Dec. 16 and died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital Dec. 29 was published with her father's permission by the Sunday People newspaper in London Sunday.
"We want the world to know her real name," the father of the 23-year-old woman told Sunday People. "My daughter didn’t do anything wrong; she died while protecting herself. I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter."
According to Sunday People, it is illegal for Indian media outlets to identify a rape victim unless either she or her family authorizes it, depending on the circumstances.
Meanwhile, prosecutors in a Delhi court proceeding Saturday presented DNA evidence linking all five of the adults charged in the murder case to the victim, according to the Economic Times. The juvenile in the case is being prosecuted separately.
