Demi Lovato Talks About Max Ehrich, Says Their Gender Identity Was Not 'Digestible' For Ex-Fiancé
Demi Lovato has opened up the relationship they shared with ex-fiancé Max Ehrich and how he helped the singer find their true self.
"I was able to stand on my own two feet without needing someone else to validate me or to make me feel accepted," the 29-year-old singer told The 19th on Thursday. "And when I said goodbye to that relationship, I also said goodbye to everything that was holding me back from being my most authentic self."
A couple of months ago, Lovato came out as non-binary. The pop star said they ignored everything else when they were in a relationship with Ehrich.
"I met someone and I got into this straight relationship, and that was great, but that led me to ignoring all the parts of myself that I didn't think were digestible for my partner at the time, who ended up becoming my fiancé," Lovato explained.
The "Dancing with the Devil" star said they might identify themselves as "trans" in future, adding, "I don't know what this looks like for me." They added, "It's about keeping it open and free and just I'm a very fluid person, and so that goes with how I express myself as well."
In March, the singer called herself "pansexual."
"Gender norms and sexuality norms aside, I kind of felt a prisoner to my entire career and childhood growing up in the South as a Christian," the singer, who was in a relationship with Ehrich from March to September 2020, told EW. "The queerness in me was, like, ready to explode when I filmed the music video at Pride.”
Moreover, Lovato noted, "Regardless if drama is happening or not, I am too gay to marry a man right now. I don't know if that will change in 10 years and I don't know if that'll never change, but I love accepting myself."
Last month, the singer celebrated International Non-Binary People's Day and posted a message on Instagram.
Lovato is filming a television series, titled "Hungry," which is currently under pre-production.
