Abby Broyles, a Democratic candidate for Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District, is under fire for allegedly insulting and cursing several pre-teen girls during a slumber party hosted by a friend.
The House candidate said she does not remember she got drunk and lashed out at pre-teen girls during the slumber party on Feb. 11, contrary to the allegations of parents whose middle school children went to the sleepover.
In a recent interview with KFOR-TV’s Kevin Ogle, Broyles said she was invited to the Valentine’s Day slumber party hosted by her friend. She said she was close with the host’s daughter. According to her, her friend was the “only parent there that night.”
In the account of the parents whose children attended the slumber party that was first reported by Nondoc.com, the 32-year-old Democratic House candidate got intoxicated and spoke profane words against some of the girls aged 12 and 13 who came over for the sleepover party.
Broyles allegedly called one girl “acne f****r,” another tween a “judgy f****r,” and another girl a “Hispanic f****r.”
She also allegedly vomited into a laundry basket, according to the report.
During the interview, Ogle noted that there have been multiple reports regarding the alleged incidents that took place during the sleepover. In response, Broyles said the host “asked me to bring some wine.”
Ogle also pressed her for answers regarding "people out there watching right now saying, 'Come on. She blacked out and doesn’t remember.'" The House candidate went on to explain that she “struggled with stress and anxiety and insomnia” for years, adding that her friend who hosted the slumber party “gave me a medication I had never taken before. And I had an adverse reaction. Instead of helping me sleep, I hallucinated.”
Broyles tearfully said she doesn’t remember anything until she woke up. “I remember starting to hallucinate, and the rest is just blurry,” she said.
Nondoc.com reported that Broyles threatened to sue the outlet for reporting the claims about her. “I’m running for office. You don’t think this is a political attack? You don’t think this is something they cooked up?” Broyles allegedly said over the phone Thursday morning. At that time, Broyles said the claims were “not true,” further denying that she was not in town on Feb. 11.
In an email exchange with the outlet, Broyles, a former KFOR reporter, allegedly refused to specify her whereabouts on the evening of the slumber party.
Sarah Matthews, whose pre-teen daughter was among the slumber party attendees, took to Twitter to call out Broyles for allegedly not reaching out “to any of the young ladies (12 & 13 yr olds, including my daughter) you verbally and emotionally abused last weekend.”
Broyles, an attorney, challenged Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe in 2020 and garnered 33% of the vote. This time, she is challenging Republican Rep. Stephanie Bice for the congressional seat. Bice has been serving as the House representative for Oklahoma’s 5th district since 2021, The Oklahoman reported.
Broyles said she “deeply” regrets the events that took place during the slumber party and apologized to the girls and their families, but she has yet to announce whether she will continue her congressional campaign.
Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, said “the party will not get in her way” if Broyles decides to pursue her candidacy.
