Dempsey, Fulham can’t put Chelsea away, Settle for a Scoreless Draw
Chelsea's hopes of repeating as Premier League Champions continue to fade.
The Blues put little pressure on the Fulham goal, and settled for a scoreless draw with their neighbors at Craven Cottage.
Clint Dempsey had numerous opportunities to score, including a penalty kick that was blocked by Petr Cech in the 90th minute, and a following bicycle kick that sailed high immediately following Cech's block.
In about the 82 minute, Dempsey, who was playing a more attacking role, fired a right-footed shot that was saved by Cech.
It was an overall disappointing effort for the American, who has been praised for his recent play.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had a great deal of trouble mustering an attack throughout the entire match.
Didier Drogba replaced Fernando Torres, who went a second game without scoring for his new club, with roughly 20 minutes remaining. Though Drogba created opportunities, Chelsea couldn't find the back of the net.
It was the second straight game without a goal for Chelsea, who remain in fifth place in the Premier League standings.
Fulham, at one point fearing a drop to League One, appear to be safe from relegation. But the missed penalty by Dempsey must have the Cottagers wondering how this one got away.
