Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was recently inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He spent his entire 20-year MLB career with the Yankees and earned hundreds of millions of dollars before he retired in 2014.
Jeter made more than $266 million playing baseball in the Bronx for 20 seasons, with a peak annual pay of $21 million in 2010, according to Spotrac. He first started making at least $10 million per year in 2000. By 2006, he was averaging $20 million annually in baseball salary.
By the time he retired, Jeter had also earned around $130 million from endorsement deals with brands such as Nike’s Jordan Brand, Gatorade, Rawlings, Steiner Sports and Movado, Forbes reported. This brought his total career earnings to a staggering $400 million.
The 47-year-old New Jersey native is currently worth about $200 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Jeter was selected by the Yankees with the sixth overall pick in the 1992 draft. He played four seasons in minor league baseball before making his MLB debut in 1995. He went on to win both Rookie of the Year and the World Series that year. He also played on Series-winning Yankee teams in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.
Jeter was named the 11th captain in franchise history in 2003. He was a 14-time All-Star player and a five-time winner of each of the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards. During his 20-year career, he had 3,465 hits, the sixth-highest total in big league history.
After he retired from professional baseball, Jeter started the media outlet The Players' Tribune, which was bought in 2019 by Minute Media for an undisclosed amount, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In 2017, Jeter partnered with Bruce Sherman to purchase the Miami Marlins for $1.2 billion, the Miami Herald reported. Jeter owns a 4% stake in the Marlins and is the CEO of the company.
Jeter also joined the board of Rockefeller Capital Management, Forbes reported in April.
On Wednesday, Jeter, alongside Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and late labor pioneer Marvin Miller, was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame during baseball's first induction ceremony since July 21, 2019.
The 2020 ceremony had been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year's induction was initially slated to be a television-only event but was postponed to allow fans to attend the ceremony that took place on the lawn outside the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, New York, ESPN reported.
