KEY POINTS

  • Legendary shards are acquired by dismantling legendary or purple gear in “Destiny 2”
  • Almost every activity in the game can reward players with legendary items
  •  Daily bounties are great for shard farming

Legendary shards are essential for upgrading gear and purchasing certain items from different vendors in “Destiny 2.” They’re also used to buy rare materials like Enhancement Prisms and Ascendant Shards, making them very valuable.

While Legendary Shards are more common than their rarer counterparts, it doesn’t mean that collecting them will be easy. Players who upgrade their weapons often will almost always find themselves short of Legendary Shards when they need them most.

Luckily, farming for Legendary Shards can be made easy if players know what they’re doing. Here are some of the quickest ways to get these shards in “Destiny 2.”

Dismantle unused gear

Returning players can opt to dismantle their unused purple items that are lying around in their Vaults to get more Legendary Shards. While some returnees might feel bad about thinning their hoard, it’s important to note that many of the old gear acquired before the “Beyond Light” expansion cannot be upgraded past the game’s new Light level cap.

Tower Vendors and Planetary NPCs

Players can turn in Gunsmith Materials to Banshee-44 in exchange for a random purple item that can be dismantled into legendary shards. Make sure to do Banshee’s daily bounties and dismantle blue-tier items to get as many materials as possible.

The same goes for the main NPCs in planets like Devrim Kay on the EDZ. Give them enough planetary resources, and they’ll reward players with purple items that can be dismantled into even more shards.

Alternatively, Spider at the Tangled Shore sells Legendary Shards. This method is great for players with plenty of resources on hand but not so much for new players who are just starting out.

Gambit and Crucible

Ranking up in either Gambit and Crucible can reward players with legendary items that are often as strong or better than the gear they have equipped. Players who aren’t interested in using these weapons can simply dismantle them for the shards.

Valor and Infamy ranks can be reset once max level is achieved, giving players another round of free legendary items.

Players who don’t enjoy PvP can choose to go with Strikes instead. Make sure to take bounties from Zavala before heading out to a mission as these reward Vanguard Tokens that can be used to rank up and get a free legendary item.
