KEY POINTS

  • The next-gen consoles will immediately have "Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition" available digitally
  • Vergil will be a playable character, joining Dante, Nero, and V in the roster
  • Turbo Mode and Legendary Dark Knight Mode are also part of the special edition

The respective launches of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will have one big title for buyers to play with immediately.

Capcom’s “Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition” will be available digitally for both systems when each is launched on Nov. 10 (Xbox Series X) and Nov. 12 in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea (PS5). The rest of the world can purchase the PlayStation 5 on Nov. 19.

The acclaimed action series starring the demon hunter Dante began in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and has spawned several sequels with either Dante, his estranged twin brother Vergil, or the teenager Nero as the lead character.

The video game began when game creator Hideki Kamiya wanted to create a game with more action features while working on the “Resident Evil” series. At that time, Capcom felt the horror series did not need.

With “Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition,” Vergil once again becomes a playable character. For those who already bought the original “Devil May Cry 5” on the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, GameSpot reports that they may purchase Vergil as a paid DLC for $5 at a date to be announced later.

For this special edition, Vergil joins the line-up of playable characters that previously included Dante, Nero, and the mysterious “V,” who has a secret connection to Vergil.

Two gaming modes will also be included in “Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition.” Legendary Dark Knight mode significantly increases the number of enemies in each level while Turbo mode increases the game speed by 20%.

Although the additional power of the next-gen consoles are supposed to enhance “Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition,” ray-tracing will unfortunately not be present for Turbo and Legendary Dark Knight modes.

Since its 2019 release, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, “Devil May Cry 5” became the top-selling game for the franchise. It won the Award for Excellence at the 2019 Japan Game Awards and Best Visual Design at the 2019 Golden Joystick Awards. It was also awarded Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2019 and Excellence in Gameplay at this year’s SXSW Gaming Awards.
