  • Joe DiPietro and David Bryan penned the musical

Netflix dropped the "Diana: The Musical" trailer, which is based on Princess Diana's teenage years. The trailer comes before the show's release on Broadway. However, the trailer didn’t go well with the fans.

The streaming giant took to Twitter Thursday to share the trailer and wrote in the caption, "Celebrate the life and legacy of Princess Diana in DIANA: THE MUSICAL, debuting on Netflix October 1 before hitting the Broadway stage this fall."

The trailer opened with "Netflix Presents" written with white glitter (usually it is written in red) and the teenage Princess of Wales could be seen standing alone on the stage. In the next scene, the paparazzi can be seen clicking her photos while fans are trying to reach her.

Many other royal family characters could be seen surrounding Diana's on-stage character including Prince Charles played by Roe Hartrampf, Queen Elizabeth II portrayed by Judy Kaye, Camilla Parker Bowles played by Erin Davie and the lead role of Diana is portrayed by Jeanna De Waal.

The musical is directed by Christopher Ashley and penned by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan.

Fans took to the comments section to share their reactions.

One of the fans wrote, "Don't get me wrong, I adore documentaries and films about Princess Diana and have watched plenty, but something about this being a musical feels gross. It feels like a line was crossed that I didn't even know was there."

Another fan noted that they are going to unsubscribe Netflix, "WHAT? No, thanks...not gonna see it. Well I'm waiting for tomorrow Lucifer Season 6 to unsubscribe."

Another commented, "I feel like it's too soon to make a musical about this..... right? I know Evita was also pretty soon, but she died from a disease, not a tragic "accident."

The musical was originally slated to release in March 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the date was pushed forward. The show is all set to premiere on Oct. 1 on Netflix and Nov. 17 on Broadway.

This is not the first time Netflix is releasing content about Princess Diana. Previously, the streaming giant dropped "The Crown," which centered on her marriage with Prince Charles. Season 5 of "The Crown" is slated for a 2022 release.
