  • Angelina Jolie recently broke "Harry Potter" star Rupert Grint's record on Instagram
  • But the Guinness World Records title holder for fastest to reach one million followers is Moon Tae-il
  • Jolie joined Instagram to share the stories of those who are fighting for their basic human rights across the globe

Angelina Jolie officially joined Instagram for a reason.

The "Eternals" star is now among the Hollywood royalties present on the photo-sharing platform. Jolie joined Instagram to share a letter she received from an Afghan girl. Just three days after she created her account, she now has around 8.9 million followers and counting.

Jolie reportedly surpassed Rupert Grint and Sir David Attenborough who also broke the record when they joined the platform by making 2.1 million new followers in under three hours.

In October, Jennifer Aniston also broke the Guinness World Record for fastest to reach one million Instagram followers. She made one million followers in five hours and 45 minutes at the time.

For her first post, she shared a selfie with her "Friends" co-stars Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc.

"And now we’re Instagram FRIENDS too. HI INSTAGRAM," she wrote in the caption.

However, it did not take long before the title was snatched from Aniston. Attenborough made one million followers in just over four hours. Grint surpassed Attenborough's record when the "Harry Potter" star made one million followers in four hours and one minute.

With Jolie's two million followers under three hours, there is no doubt that she surpassed Aniston, Attenborough and Grint. However, based on the Guinness World Records, South Korean singer Moon Tae-il currently holds the title after attracting one million followers in just 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Jolie joined Instagram to use the platform to support the refugees from Afghanistan. In her bio, she identified herself as a mom, filmmaker and Special Envoy for UNHCR. For her first post, she shared the letter she received from an Afghan girl who opened up about her fears amid the chaos in her country.

"This is a letter I was sent from a teenage girl in Afghanistan. Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely," Jolie wrote in the caption. "So I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights."

Jolie said it was "sickening" to watch the Afghans being displaced and treated like a burden for years. She believed that they could do more if they have the "tools and respect" due to them. The actress vowed to "continue to look for ways to help." She also hoped that many people would join her.
