Did Gabrielle Union Know About Dwyane Wade's Love Child With Sandrina Schultz Before He Proposed? NBA Star Reveals He Has Third Son
NBA star Dwyane Wade recently proposed to girlfriend Gabrielle Union, but it came to light Monday night that he had a love child outside of their relationship. Wade confirmed the news during a press conference, saying, "I had a time, a part in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy. So I’m moving on.”
The couple began dating in 2009, but took time apart earlier this year because of their busy schedules. On "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Wade said in September, "Celebrity relationships [are] very hard. This was a big year for us and our relationship from the standpoint of she was shooting her show 'Being Mary Jane,' going most of the year. I was dealing with my injuries, trying to win a championship, so we kinda took a step back.
"We supported each other," he continued, "but at the end of the day we came back together and [said], 'Listen, we want to continue this, we want to continue to try to get better each day,' and she's been with me, and I've been with her all summer long. We're going strong now."
Wade revealed the surprising news about his third son prior to the Heat’s game against the Denver Nuggets. "I'm in the public eye, so obviously that's a part of it," the 31-year-old father said of the birth making headlines. "It comes with the territory."
The child's mother has been identified as Sandrina Schultz, a 29-year-old woman Wade has known for a number of years. Schultz has also reportedly had an affair in the past with NBA player Lamar Odom and spoke to Star magazine about his alleged drug use.
Wade said that Union, 41, knew about the baby prior to him proposing on Dec. 21, and they have worked through it as a couple. The NBA star said that he enlisted the help of his two sons -- Zion, Zaire, and his nephew, Dahveon Morris -- to help with the special moment.
On the big day, Union was helping out around the house, when suddenly, Wade’s youngest son, Zion, held a sign with her name. His nephew held a sign, saying "Will you," and his oldest son, Zaire's, sign read "marry us?" Wade told the Associated Press on Sunday.
When Union turned around, Wade was on one knee. "Just a regular Saturday," Wade said. "My kids were involved in it. We asked her to marry all of us, not just me. We're a package deal, so it was cool." After the shocked actress said “Yes,” he placed a stunning 8.5 carat diamond ring on her finger.
"I kind of know my lady," Wade said about the jewelry. "I know she's simple, but at the same time, I just wanted the rock to kind of speak for itself and not do too much with the diamonds. I think it's a simple ring, but it's nice. It was nicely done ... it's timeless."
Wade spent three months finding the perfect ring for his fiancée. This will be the second marriage for both. Wade’s teammate, LeBron James, expressed his happiness for the couple.
"It took a lot for him to do it," James said. "But I think Gab is perfect for him. I think D-Wade is perfect for Gab. For them to be at one now and for their whole family to come together, man, I think it's amazing. It's another step for him. I thought it was pretty cool. I'm all for it. I'm happy for them."
