Did Justin Bieber Cause Selena Gomez’s Breakup With The Weekend?
Selena Gomez and The Weekend called it quits after nearly 10 months of dating. Before the news broke, Gomez was spotted with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, which led some to wonder if the “Love Yourself” singer was the cause for the breakup.
To try to make things work, Gomez joined The Weekend, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, on his “Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour.”
“She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship,” an insider told People Magazine Monday. “It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.”
Long distance got in the way of their relationship. Gomez “always made an effort” to go to his shows, but it wasn’t always possible. “That played a part in them getting distant,” the source said. “It’s over for now, but they’re still in touch.”
They didn’t want to admit it was over between them. “It’s been hard for them to come to the realization that this is the direction things were heading, but it’s been hard for months,” the source said.
Some might be surprised by the split, since they were on seemingly solid ground a month before they broke up. “They’re rock solid and very happy together,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in September.
The duo were first spotted together in January. They made their debut as a couple at the 2017 Met Gala in May.
Gomez wasn’t shy about showing her affection for The Weekend on Instagram, but she didn’t talk about him too much in interviews. “I’m the kind of girl that loves tremendously big. I just have always been that girl,” she told Miami’s Power 96.5 FM in May. “I will give my heart and my soul to the person that I love. It’s just how I operate.”
Since her breakup from the “Earned It” singer, Gomez was spotted with Bieber multiple times. The two were on-again, off-again from 2011 to 2014.
Her family wasn’t happy they reconnected. “Justin is a vile human and will never be accepted by us. As long as she is even speaking to him in any way, it is not only disrespectful to everyone around her, it is disrespectful to herself,” one of Gomez’s family members reportedly told TMZ.
While it might seem like the former lovers are ignited their romance again, they’re “just friends,” a source previously told Us Weekly. “They both have a long history with each other so they will always have a place in their heart for one another,” the source added, saying: There is “nothing romantic is going on” between them.
Before Gomez, The Weekend dated Bella Hadid from May 2015 to November 2016.
