Did Kevin Durant Reveal He's Leaving Warriors During Draymond Green Confrontation?
Attention surrounding Kevin Durant's future with the Golden State Warriors went into overdrive following his confrontation with Draymond Green. But did Durant contribute to it himself?
With the game tied against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, Green missed the chance to pass the ball to Durant and instead lost the ball as the game went into overtime where the Warriors went on to lose.
This resulted in a confrontation with Durant as teammates separated the pair at the end of regulation time before reports claimed things further escalated into the locker room afterward in what was one of the “most intense” scenes of the Golden State era.
Green was later suspended for Tuesday's win over the Atlanta Hawks, but the more interesting news was what he reportedly said to Durant.
Reports first claimed he challenged Durant over his impending free agency next year, which seems to imply the attention toward it has been an issue for the Warriors players despite head coach Steve Kerr saying otherwise.
Yahoo then claimed Green repeatedly called Durant a "b---h" during their exchange:
"Draymond Green’s one-game suspension for “conduct detrimental to the team” came after he repeatedly called Kevin Durant a “b---h” in a verbal confrontation between the two stars during the Golden State Warriors’ loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, league sources told Yahoo Sports."
Marcus Thompson of The Athletic then claimed Green said, "Who the f--k you talking to?" in response to Durant.
The most interesting tidbit, however, came from Durant himself.
As posted by a Twitter user, the 30-year-old appears to be saying, "That's why I'm out," during the confrontation with Green.
Of course, it's not guaranteed that he's talking about his impending free agency, but it's definitely a possibility, especially with reports claiming one veteran Warrior being aware that he's headed elsewhere next year.
Durant's free agency has been a major topic for quite some time now as he can become an unrestricted free agent next summer and leave the Bay Area in search of a new challenge.
The Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks are the teams that seem the likeliest as potential destinations.
New York's appeal is reportedly the same for Durant as Los Angeles was for LeBron James. In addition, his business partner Rich Kleiman is based in New York, his father is a Knicks fan while good friend Royal Ivey is the team's current assistant coach.
As for the Lakers, they are on the lookout for another high-profile star to add to James next year.
NBA insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson reported in September that Durant would be joining the Lakers next summer, where he will be set up as the face of the franchise once James eventually leaves.
The latest according to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith is that the Lakers are the current frontrunners, though the Knicks remain in the race.
“I am hearing Knicks and Lakers with the Lakers having the edge," Smith said on his radio show. "That is what I am hearing. Two weeks ago I heard the Knicks had the edge. Now I hear the Lakers had the edge."
"Let me tell you something, it appears to be one of those two teams which is Kevin Durant’s next destination," he added.
