Did Lil Wayne Leave Cash Money? Rapper Says He Joined Jay Z’s Roc Nation
Lil Wayne has been signed to Cash Money Records ever since his debut album in 1999 released, but has the Louisiana rapper’s time with the label finally ended? During a recent concert at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, the rapper once again said he was a member of Jay Z’s Roc Nation.
“Is it cool if I just say it,” Weezy asked the crowd. “It’s the Roc. You know I’m a member of that team now. We’ll talk about that later though,” he added, before throwing up the Roc-A-Fella diamond sign.
While there has been no official announcement from Cash Money Records or Roc Nation, it’s not Lil Wayne’s first time bringing up a deal with Jay Z. In 2005, the rapper claimed he moved with Jay Z to Def Jam, but that turned out to be false.
In 2015, Lil Wayne once again told a crowd that he had signed with his “idol” Jay Z. Fans once again thought this meant the rapper had made the move to Roc Nation, but it turned out Weezy’s deal with Jay Z had to do with streaming service Tidal.
The following year, the rapper once again sent fans into a frenzy when he gave a shout out to Roc-A-Fella and changed the lyrics to his song, rapping, “I’m a Roc-A-Fella millionaire.” Following the performance, a statement confirming Lil Wayne’s move was never released.
In recent months, Jay Z has signed a number of artists to Roc Nation including Fat Joe, Jim Jones, Freeway and The Lox, expanding his artist roster to more than 15 musicians.
Following a long feud with Birdman, it should come as no surprise that Lil Wayne wants to leave Cash Money records, but his latest announcement could be a diss towards Birdman. The two have been beefing since 2014 when Lil Wayne claimed the label would not release his “Carter V” album.
While the album has yet to be released, Birdman told .wav radio in January it was “definitely coming out,” and his situation with Lil Wayne would be put behind him as he was looking to “just let it move forward.”
