Michelle Obama was persistent to have a decades-long marriage with Barack.
The former president and first lady have a great love story. Initially, Michelle thought that Barack was just one of the good-looking and smooth-talking guys the first time they met. But she later realized that he has strong moral values.
On Barack’s end, the ex-POTUS told Oprah Winfrey that he was immediately struck with Michelle’s height and beauty. In fact, he felt that working with Michelle was the “luckiest break of my life.”
Despite Michelle’s reluctance, she was drawn to Barack. For their first date, Barack treated Michelle to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins and he kissed her. However, despite their great relationship, Barack had no plans of marrying Michelle at the time.
According to The List, there was almost no wedding if Michelle had been a little less persistent. Barack was dedicated to their relationship and was madly in love with Michelle, but he didn’t believe that marriage was necessary even calling it a “meaningless institution.”
Michelle kept turning up the pressure because she wanted a decades-long marriage like her parents, who at the time were going strong for 30 years. In 1991, Barack finally surprised Michelle with a ring after she “began to drop some not-so-subtle hints about her plan to be married.”
“That kind of shuts you up, doesn’t it?“ Barack told Michelle during his proposal. On Oct. 26, 1992, they exchanged their vows.
Meanwhile, according to David Garrow in his book “Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama,” he proposed to Sheila Miyoshi Jagger, a PhD student at the University of Chicago, before he met Michelle. In a letter addressed to a friend, Barack described Jagger as a “very sweet lady.” He added that he was not used to having another person underfoot the whole time and he missed the solitude of the bachelor’s life but realized that it was nice to have someone to go home to after a late night’s work.
Barack and Jagger’s relationship ended when she realized that he had his sights on becoming president. Jagger said that at the time, Barack became “brooding, quiet, distant.” He started talking about politics and the race and it became a big issue between them.
