Football legend Diego Maradona has passed away due to heart failure. He lived a full life and amassed a considerable fortune. How much was his net worth at the time of his passing?
Maradona is considered one of the greatest players of all time. He led Argentina in winning the World Cup in 1986. He scored the controversial “Hand of God” goal as replays showed he punched the ball to the net but the referee did not see the action so it was ruled as a valid goal. His popularity would soon reach epic levels after playing for Napoli and Barcelona.
At the time of his death, however, he only had around $500,000, according to Celebrity Net Worth. This is a far cry from his peak when he could command several millions in salary and sponsorship deals.
The Buenos Aires-native enjoyed years long banter with friendly rival Brazilian Pele. The two were considered the greatest to ever do it, but fans are divided on who really is the greatest of all time.
The Argentine debuted for Argentinos Juniors but was quickly scouted and acquired by Boca Juniors due to his undeniable talent. In 1982, he joined football giants Barcelona. He encountered problems while in Spain and he would soon find himself playing for Napoli which paid a record fee to sign him at that time. He led the Italian team to two championships but his problems would soon compound after getting involved with the mafia who supplied him with banned substances.
Maradona’s drug and alcohol addiction would lead to his demise. He failed several drug tests which led to his downfall at Napoli. He also failed a drug test during the 1994 World Cup.
After he retired in 1997, he tried his hand at coaching. According to Goal.com, his compensation as the coach of Dorados was about $150,000 per month. He also became a FIFA ambassador after this stint.
Outside football, he earned a decent sum off brand partnerships. “El Pibe de Oro” represented Puma, Coca Cola, Hublot and Konami in the past. The football legend also had a huge following on social media. His combined following on Facebook and Instagram is around 16 million.
Tributes from around the world poured in for the Argentine magician. Compatriot Leo Messi, football star Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele and Kylian Mbappe all expressed admiration and condolences on their social media pages. Before succumbing to heart failure, Maradona battled different health issues in the past including subdural hematoma, per CNN.
