The world is in mourning after the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona. The Argentine football legend passed away Wednesday at the age of 60 due to a heart attack. It remains unknown if his recent brain surgery was tied to his passing.
But while most had wanted a peaceful and fitting send-off for one of the greatest to play the sport, his funeral was marred by the irresponsible actions of some individuals who allegedly worked at a funeral home.
Three individuals drew the ire of many when they took a selfie next to the late soccer’s open coffin. Before he was buried Thursday, photos popped up on social media showing the funeral workers posing with Maradona’s body.
One man in a white shirt and black tie could be seen standing over the coffin giving a thumbs up, The Guardian reported. Another image showed two men by Maradona’s body.
The 75-year-old owner of the funeral parlor was left devastated by the incident. Matias Picon, the manager of the Pinier funeral home, later said that the man in the white shirt was only a temporary worker. The funeral home needed to take in temporary workers since Maradona’s cedar coffin was heavy and hard to move.
Picon added that he had to call the ex-wife of Maradona, Claudia Villafañe, to apologize and explain the unfortunate incident. He was told that the whole thing should have never happened and that it was not the photo they had wanted.
Maradona’s agent and lawyer, Matias Morla, was also livid with the person who took a photo of himself with the Argentine legend. He vows to make that person pay for his actions.
Aside from this, Morla vowed to look deeper into Maradona’s death. Branding it as “criminal idiocy,” he wondered why it took more than half an hour for the ambulance to arrive at Maradona’s home.
The incident is also being checked by prosecutors who are looking into the matter. No allegation of foul play has been made, TMZ Sports reported.
In related news, Maradona’s coaching staff at Gimnasia y La Plata resigned from the team following the football legend’s death, ESPN reported. Sebastian Mendez took over from Maradona when the latter was hospitalized on Nov. 2.
"This is a decision that our club understands and one that demonstrates the human quality of the entire work group that Diego Maradona had formed, and that had been developing their work so well,” the team’s statement read.
