Dirk Nowitzki Advises Kevin Durant On Social Media Do's And Don't's
Kevin Durant has been at the center of a social media furor after his spat with the Portland Trail Blazers’ CL McCollum over the past week after the latter spoke about his decision to ditch Oklahoma City Thunder and join the Golden State Warriors. NBA veteran Dirk Nowitzki had some words of advice to his fellow championship winner.
The feud began when McCollum spoke about DeMarcus Cousins’ trade from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Warriors earlier this month — making them even more favorites for the 2019 NBA Championship. Durant hit back suggesting that the Trail Blazers will not win a championship anyway with their current roster.
The 26-year-old shooting guard then touched on a sensitive subject — Durant’s move from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Warriors — which brought about another reaction from the two-time NBA Finals MVP. He went on to call the Trail Blazers star a "snake."
Durant, however, played down the spat between the two players and even suggested recently that he will meet the shooting guard for a glass of wine when he returns from China. He also had some words for the media about twisting his words and labeling him "sensitive."
The spat with McCollum was not the only social media altercation that made the news, prior to his altercation with the Trail Blazers player, he got into a spat with a fan on Instagram. He replied to a post that he was tagged in that questioned his leadership skills with the comment: “Bruh go sweep ya dorm room, u don't know hoops. Stop tagging me in this trash.”
And it is not the first time that the Warriors star has got into an argument with a fan on social media. Nowitzki, who signed on with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this month for his 21st NBA campaign, had some advice for his fellow NBA Finals MVP about how to handle fans talking trash about the players.
“I don’t follow him on Twitter, but obviously it’s tough not to see what’s going on,” Nowitzki recently said on “The Dan Patrick Show," as quoted on Yahoo Sports. “I just think overall and in general, I don’t know why you would get engaged with fans talking trash.”
“I like having fun with it. I get hit up on Twitter every now and then in my mentions. ‘Hey, you’re old, go away. Retire.’ Or something like that. To me, it’s fun. You’re not supposed to be sensitive about it. That’s how I look at it,” he said.
“I’m not sure why KD feels the need to respond to some of the stuff, because, I mean, Twitter is just such a place for tough guys and a lot of hate. I take it with a smile on my face. You can’t take yourself too serious on there,” the 2011 NBA champion added.
