'Dirty John' Season 2: Was Betty Broderick A Real Person? True Crime Facts Before Premiere
On Tuesday night, Season 2 of "Dirty John" will premiere on the USA Network. "Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story" will follow the title character and the circumstances surrounding her ex-husband's murder. Is the new true-crime show based off of a true story? Here's what viewers should know leading up to the new episodes.
Those who tune in to watch Season 2 will, in fact, be introduced to a true story. Throughout the eight-part limited series, audiences will be taken along as the show follows Elisabeth “Betty” Broderick. A preview can be seen below.
During the morning hours of Nov. 5, 1989, San Diego attorney Dan Broderick and Linda, his second wife, were shot to death in their bed. What followed was a short investigation due to the fact that Betty Broderick, Dan's ex-wife, had turned herself in. While she admitted to committing the crimes, she stated that it had not been premeditated. As reported by CBS8, this story went on to become "one of San Diego's most well-known murder cases."
After her admission, Broderick faced two trials surrounding the murders. During the first, which began in October 1990, two of her four children took the stand to testify. At that time, Kim, 20, and Lee, 19, discussed not only their parents' relationship but also what their mother had said about the murders after the fact. One of Broderick's friends also spoke about her love of money, stating that she was "real close" to it and that "she worshiped" it.
During each of her trials, Broderick took the stand to defend herself against the accusations. She also elaborated that she did not remember pulling the trigger and firing the five rounds that were responsible for killing Dan and Linda. Ultimately, a mistrial was declared after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. However, that was not the end of the story for Broderick.
In 1991, she once again went on trial for the crimes. This time, the outcome was much different as she was found guilty of second-degree murder.
On Tuesday night, the new season of the true-crime series will explore a variety of thought-provoking questions throughout the episodes, including what led them to their "breaking points" and how the supposed imbalance of power in their relationship played into the ultimate outcome. It will also feature an impressive cast, including Amanda Peet as Betty and Christian Slater as Dan.
The first two episodes of "Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story" will premiere Tuesday at 9 p.m. EDT on USA Network. Subsequent episodes will air at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays.
