DJ Earworm Mashes Katy Perry, Rihanna in United State of Pop 2011: World Go Boom [VIDEO]
Pop music in 2011 was all about Katy Perry and her number one singles.
DJ Earworm, mash-up master, has combined the top 25 songs of the year in his annual United State of Pop jingle. This year, the theme is World Go Boom, led by the bridge from Perry's hit, Firework.
2011 gave us songs of regret and anger, pride and perseverance, and lots of fire. When someone's taken everything from you, what do you do? DJ Earworm, wrote on his blog on Dec. 25.
The 2011 mix features three hits from Perry (Firework, E.T., Last Friday Night), as well as two singles each from Adele, Bruno Mars, LMFAO and Rihanna. There are also some of the year's other movers and shakers, including Cee Lo Green (F--- You!), Lady Gaga (Born This Way) and Nicki Minaj (Super Bass).
Perry, 27, has had quite the year, thanks to her third studio album Teenage Dream. The singer is on pace to beat Michael Jackson's longtime record for having the most number one singles from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. If Perry's latest, The One That Got Away reaches the chart's top spot, the song will be the sixth number one hit from Teenage Dream.
Now in its fifth year, the United State of Pop mixes the most popular pop tunes of the year in both audio and video form. The 2011 version, however, is based on a new set of rules.
I've made some changes in the song selection process this year. In efforts to better reflect the year, I have a system that draws from the weekly charts from throughout 2011 that ensures that all late-breaking hits are included in the 2011 mix, wrote DJ Earworm, whose real name is Jordan Roseman.
Since 2008, the mash-up has been based on the Billboard Hot 100 chart's top 25 hits of the year. Past mixes have gained DJ Earworm millions of views on YouTube, including 2009's Blame It on the Pop, which was viewed by more than 40 million people.
