  • Djokovic and Nadal have qualified for the French Open quarters for the 15th time
  • If they win their respective games Wednesday, they'll face off in last-four
  • Nadal defeated Djokovic in the French Open final in 2020

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has claimed a rare French Open record that 13-time champion Rafael Nadal may never achieve.

Djokovic and Nadal, who have reached their 15th quarter-final at the Roland Garros, are set to play their games Wednesday. While Nadal will take on Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, Djokovic will face off Italy's Matteo Berrettini. If Nadal and Djokovic win their respective match, they'll set a thrilling semi-final clash against each other in the tournament in Paris.

The upcoming game against Berrettini is Djokovic's 12th consecutive quarter-final at the French Open. Despite winning the title just once, the World No. 1 has had a consistent run in the tournament and has made it to the last-eight round every season since 2010, Tennis World reported. In this period, the Serbian has made it to the final five times, winning just once.

Nadal, who is chasing a record 14th crown in Paris, has claimed an incredible 104 victories out of 106 games. The two losses that came in 2009 and 2015 were enough to disrupt the Spaniard's streak at his beloved Grand Slam. Nadal's longest quarter-final run in the French Open has been six straight quarters that came between 2010 and 2015. Coincidently, it was Djokovic who had ended Nadal's streak by beating the clay champion in the 2015 edition's quarters.

With 12 successive quarter-finals at the Roland Garros, Djokovic is the second player in the Open Era to make that many last-eight appearances. The record belongs to former World No. 1 Jimmy Connors, of the U.S., who played 13 quarter-finals at his favorite Grand Slam, the US Open, between 1973 and 1985.

Connors also played 11 consecutive Wimbledon quarter-finals. Former Czech-American tennis player Ivan Lendl also played 11 straight last-eight games at the US Open and 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer emulated the feat at the Australian Open between 2004 and 2014.

In the ongoing Roland Garros, Nadal is yet to drop a set. Djokovic dropped a set in his previous game, which was against young gun Lorenzo Musetti. The 19-year-old Italian player won the opening two sets against Djokovic, claiming both the sets in the tiebreak. However, the World No. 1 bounced back in time as he destroyed Musetti in the remaining three sets before the latter retired at 0-4 in the final set.
