‘Doctor Who’ Season 11 Promo Video Teases New Companions
The “Doctor Who” trailer that debuted during the World Cup game on Sunday didn’t really show much of the newest Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker. Instead, the short clip showed off the people she’ll meet in Season 11, at least some of whom will presumably be her companions.
BBC America’s promo video starts with Ryan (Tosin Cole), who seems to be eating breakfast in a diner while watching coverage of the World Cup on his phone. Nothing seems out of the ordinary until the table next to him starts shaking, and viewers see some peculiar light around him (which might remind sci-fi fans more of “The Flash” than the British cult hit).
Then the clip moves on to Yasmin (Mandip Gill), who is watching sports coverage on TV with friends. The pizza box is empty one moment, but then, after some shaking and funky lights, she has a full pie again. This time, we get a glimpse of the Doctor’s jacket.
Graham (Bradley Walsh) is reading the paper in a restaurant. Again, there’s shaking and some lights, and then we get a glimpse of the Doctor’s boots (she’s sticking to practical footwear despite the gender swap). Graham is suddenly holding “The Beano Summer Special 1981,” a children’s comics magazine. Assuming he is human, he would’ve been just approaching adulthood in 1981.
Finally, the “Doctor Who” Season 11 teaser ends with a message: “The universe is calling.” Then Whovians get one good look at the Doctor herself. She’s in a dark top with a grey coat. She’s keeping makeup minimal, but she is wearing several earrings. The Doctor has always loved to accessorize, and this choice is far subtler than the fez obsession.

This teaser is only 40 seconds long, and it really doesn’t give away much at all. The BBC America show is likely saving something bigger for San Diego Comic Con. The convention is one of the largest nerd gatherings in the world, and “Doctor Who” is set to have a presence there.
Whittaker, Cole, Gill, new showrunner Chris Chibnall and executive producer Matt Strevens will all be present at a “Who” panel, set to take place on Thursday at 11:45 a.m. PDT. They’ll be Hall H, the largest room in the San Diego Convention Center.
Fans are hoping that the panel will bring the release of a longer trailer as well as a premiere date. BBC America has stated that “Doctor Who” Season 11 is expected to debut in the fall, but an exact release date has yet to be announced.
