'Doctor Who' Spoilers: Is Danny Pink A New Companion And Will Peter Capaldi Leave After One Season?
The new "Doctor Who" season is currently filming, and the BBC has introduced a new character, Danny Pink. Some speculate the recurring character will be a new companion to Peter Capaldi's Doctor. There is also a rumor that Calapdi's tenure as the Doctor will be a brief one and will last just one season.
BBC announced Samuel Anderson ("Emmerdale," "Gavin & Stacey") as Danny Pink. The recurring character is a teacher at the Coal Hill School, where Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), the current companion, is teaching when she is not traveling through time and space. The announcement gave few clues about Pink's role in the new "Doctor Who" season, but many fans speculate that the character could serve as a love interest to Oswald or even as a companion, similar to Rory and Amy Pond.
Some of the Pink as a companion speculation comes from reading into showrunner Stephen Moffat's comments. Moffat said in a statement, ""For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it's the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi's first series of Doctor Who!"
There's not much more to go on for Pink's character, but the announcement did include other details about the filming of "Doctor Who." The show is currently filming its fourth and fifth episodes, which will co-star Robert Goodman ("Gangs of New York") in episode four as well as Jonathan Bailey ("Broadchurch") and Pippa Bennett-Warner ("The Smoke") in episode five.
The eighth season of "Doctor Who" does not even have a premiere date, but there are some rumors about an expiration date for Capladi. The rumor from the Mirror should be considered with plenty of speculation and a few grains of salts. According to the Mirror's Richard Beech, there have been some rumblings that Capaldi would only be the Doctor for a season and set up for "an even more radical (and possibly more controversial) choice for the role." Beech does not speculate on if a new Doctor would be female but that could be a "controversial" choice and a fitting one in the wake of the gender discussion when Matt Smith announced his depature from the show. Moffat's time leading "Doctor Who" could be coming to an end, and a new Doctor and a companion makes sense, argues Beech.
Considering how little has been shown of the new Doctor, the speculation that Capaldi, like Christopher Eccleston, will spend just one season as the Doctor seems premature.
