  • His parents told the doctors he had accidentally put the nut up his nose
  • The child had then started facing breathing difficulties

The doctors at a hospital in India saved the life of a 4-year-old child, who had a metal nut stuck inside his nostril.

The boy, identified as Monit Joshi, lives in the city of Rajkot in the western state of Gujarat. The child was reportedly brought to the hospital in December with a wide metal nut stuck in his right nostril. His parents told the doctors he had accidentally put the nut up his nose; however, it remains unclear where the child found the metal nut.

The child started to face breathing difficulty as there was a very narrow space for air to pass. During inspection, the doctors found the nut was very close to his nasal cavity, VTV Gujarati reported [Google Translate].

“If the nut had slipped to his nasal cavity, it would have endangered the child’s life,” ENT specialist Dr Himanshu Thakur, who conducted the procedure to remove the nut, told The Times of India.

“If the nut had gone further inside, the patient could have died. Or, during removal if he had started bleeding, it would create more problems,” Thakur said. “Metal nut was 1cm-wide and the chances of complication was very high. However, without any surgery we could remove it endoscopically.”

While the incident took place in December, the doctors revealed the case to the media only Wednesday after the child was kept under observation, and was found to be completely out of danger.

In November last year, the doctors at a hospital in India saved the life of an 18-year-old by removing two iron rods that had entered his body when his bike collided with a car. The incident took place in Rohtak, a city in the northern state of Haryana. Doctors in the cardio and anesthesia departments went back and forth before deciding to perform the extremely difficult surgery, which took nearly five hours to complete. The process began with a cardiac surgery, but, later, a mechanic who cuts iron rods was called into the operation room. The mechanic cut the rod into small pieces, following which they were removed.
