Dodgers Frank McCourt’s biggest creditor is Manny Ramirez at $21M

Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt filed for bankruptcy on Monday, following extended divorce proceedings with his estranged wife Jamie McCourt and Major League Baseball.

Due to the bankruptcy proceedings, McCourt had to publically reveal who his biggest creditors are.

The largest creditor listed was Manny Ramirez at $21 million who signed a 2 year $45 million deal in 2009, after being traded to the team a year earlier.

At the time, Ramirez was a hot commodity in baseball's free agent market and was heavily pursued by the San Francisco Giants as well before signing the contract.

After signing the large contract, Ramirez was subsequently suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance that he claimed was due to an a physician who unknowingly prescribed it.

Ramirez signed with the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this year but was forced to retire after facing a 100-game suspension for testing positive again for a banned substance.

By filing for bankruptcy protection, McCourt will get much needed time to come up with the money to pay back creditors like Ramirez.

Other players that McCourt owes large sums of money to include Andruw Jones at $11 million and Hiroki Kuroda at $4.4 million.

Bankruptcy rulings would overrule any MLB edicts, including a possible rejection of a TV deal, like the reported $3 billion deal that MLB rejected recently.
